What Can BOTOX® Treat?

There are many uses for BOTOX®, which began life in the late ’80s as a botulinum toxin-based medication to treat crossed eyes and eyelid spasms. Since then, it has been approved by the FDA for three primary cosmetic treatments: horizontal forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

Botox Cosmetic offered at The Well Lounge. The Well Lounge’s nurse injectors also use BOTOX® for other treatments that have been established as effective and safe over the years, including making the upper lip appear fuller with “lip flips,” softening prominent neck bands, addressing “smile lines” and marionette lines, softening the jawline with masseter injections, targeting under-eye “jelly rolls” or wrinkles, achieving a “brow lift” effect, reducing sweating, and even helping to ease migraines or jaw discomfort and other symptoms of TMJ.

While BOTOX® is ideal for treating lines that appear with age, it can also be used by younger women and men who want to keep their muscles at rest before certain wrinkles develop. This is considered “prejuvenation,” and you can talk to our team about whether you would be a good candidate for the strategy.

How Does BOTOX® Work?

BOTOX® belongs to a group of medications known as neuromodulators. Made from botulinum toxin type A, these injectables block the typical flow of information in the nervous system.

When injected into a muscle, BOTOX® prevents contractions. The brain still sends the message for the muscle to activate, but that message is blocked and doesn’t arrive at its destination. This is ideal for minimizing wrinkles and lines that are caused by muscle motion.

Learn how BOTOX® Cosmetic works at Newtown, PA's The Well Lounge.
BOTOX® Cosmetic at Newtown, PA's The Well Lounge prevents messages that tell facial muscles to contract from being received. As a result, those muscles stay at rest—even when certain expressions would cause them to pull the skin into noticeable wrinkles and folds—for months at a time.

Every facial expression—whether it involves raising the eyebrows in surprise, squinting in suspicion or confusion, laughing and smiling, or scowling—involves the activation of muscles that move the skin into the appropriate position. When these contractions pull the skin into the same position over and over again for decades, the repetition starts to create visible creases.

Aging skin also loses elasticity and moisture over time, so it is less able to “snap back” into a smooth and unlined state after it is creased by a smile or squint. Eventually, brow furrows and crinkled skin next to the eyes deepen and can become quite prominent.
These are known as “dynamic wrinkles.”

Injecting BOTOX® into the muscles responsible for specific dynamic wrinkles keeps the muscles at rest and the wrinkles from showing as dramatically—if at all. The effect is localized and temporary, impacting only the treatment area and lasting for a few months before wearing off. That means you can enjoy a smoother, more youthful-looking forehead while still being able to make all of the expressions you typically make.

What Does a BOTOX® Session Involve?

At The Well Lounge in Newtown and Horsham, PA, we welcome anyone considering BOTOX® injections to arrange a consultation to start the process. Before deciding on BOTOX® or any botulinum toxin-based treatments, you will meet with an injector who will listen to your cosmetic goals, examine the state of your skin, and work directly with you to develop a plan. Many people are ideal candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic, while others would benefit more from a different option, or even a combination of treatments. This consultation is the ideal time to discuss all cosmetic goals, as well as get answers for questions about BOTOX® cost, effects, risks, and other details.

Patient gets Botox Cosmetic from a master injector at The Well Lounge.BOTOX® injections are quick to administer, taking only a few minutes from start to completion. A typical injection session lasts no longer than a lunch break. Sessions can be handled quickly because BOTOX® is such a straightforward treatment and our injectors are very educated, well trained, and extremely experienced in providing the medication safely. Safety is a top priority, which is why we take great care with each injection. We also aim to maximize natural-looking results, so the skin-smoothing effect complements your other features and creates an overall more youthful look as opposed to standing out.

People tend to describe the feeling of getting an injection as similar to a quick pinch. We want the experience to be as smooth and comfortable as possible for you, so if you have any concerns about needles or pain, let us know. We can reduce sensation in the treatment area, as well as answer your questions about what exactly to expect, whether you are getting BOTOX® for TMJ, a lip flip, or crow’s feet.

What Happens After a BOTOX® Treatment Session?

You should avoid pressing on the injection site, engaging in intense exercise, or enjoying a hot tub or sauna for about 24 hours after your treatment session.

Most people will experience a few minor and brief side effects following their appointment, including slight redness and swelling due to the injection. There may also be some temporary discomfort, which quickly fades. Your injector will talk with you about what to expect and watch for, but be prepared to get back to your general daily schedule right away. There is no need to take any down time or schedule any rest instead of work, social obligations, and similar activities.

When Are Results from BOTOX® Visible?

The active ingredient in BOTOX®—botulinum toxin type A—will begin to work on the muscles as soon as it is injected, but it takes a little time for the effects to be visible. You should see some noticeable reduction in muscle activity within a few days, with the results continuing to improve throughout the week. Eventually, your muscles will reach maximum relaxation, so that even if you raise your eyebrows, squint, or lower your brow, the unwanted lines and furrows will not form.

The timing is similar for a lip flip or neck band treatment. After a lip flip injection session, the muscles that keep the upper lip in place will begin to “slow down,” until they eventually relax completely and allow the lip to “curl outward.” Neck bands, which are actually prominent muscles that stand out like thick cords, will also relax in a matter of days, becoming less dramatic

How Long Does BOTOX® Last?

Each person’s muscle density, degree of wrinkling, metabolism, and other factors are unique, so no two people will have the exact same BOTOX® experience. With that in mind, anyone choosing this treatment can generally expect the effects to last for about three months—though some have seen cosmetic improvement continuing for up to five months.

Since a lip flip involves the especially active muscles around the mouth, the effects wear off a little more quickly: typically around two months or so. Neck bands injected with BOTOX® can stay relaxed for four to six months.

When the effects of a BOTOX® session begin to wear off, you can contact us to schedule a new appointment. We can administer a new round of botulinum toxin type A injections to help you maintain a relaxed and refreshed look.

How Much Will BOTOX® Cost?

The question of BOTOX® cost is a common one for people considering an appointment at The Well Lounge. Anyone thinking of getting BOTOX® in Newtown, PA, is encouraged to arrange a consultation to discuss treatment specifics. Don’t just search “BOTOX® near me!” Once we learn which cosmetic issues you want to address, we can develop a plan and discuss cost, as well as other details.

Does The Well Lounge Offer More Facial Rejuvenation Options?

In addition to BOTOX®, The Well Lounge also carries Dysport®, which is another botulinum toxin injectable that works the same way. There are some slight differences that may make one option ideal over the other for certain patients, which can be discussed at your consultation.

Facial lines that come not from muscle activity, but from volume loss, require a different solution. Dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are the treatments of choice for the lines, known as static wrinkles. Fillers also work very well to restore contour in areas that have hollowed, deflated, or flattened over time.

A technique that combines BOTOX® for relaxing wrinkles, fillers for adding volume, and PDO threads for lifting sagging facial tissues is known as a liquid facelift. While the procedure doesn’t involve any surgery, it can provide a beautifully rejuvenated result that is far more dramatic than possible with just a single injectable.
