Kybella®

Shrink a Double Chin in Horsham and Newtown, PA

One of the most common cosmetic complaints people have about their body is a double chin. Technically known as “submental fullness,” the unwanted pocket of fat can resist both diet and exercise—but not the specialized injectable Kybella®. The Well Lounge, with offices in Horsham and Newtown PA, uses Kybella® to improve jawline definition and create more sculpted silhouettes for patients who want their chin and neck to be distinct features.

What Can Kybella® Treat?

The FDA has approved Kybella® specifically to address the isolated fat that “collects” below the chin.

What Causes a Double Chin?

Most women and men who deal with an unwanted double chin have large fat cells in the area, creating a bulge that becomes even more noticeable when they tilt their head downward by moving their chin to their chest. This pocket of fat may be made up of “diet-resistant” cells, which remain large even if a patient cuts calories and works out. Unfortunately, there is no way to “spot diet” or target specific areas for fat reduction through lifestyle changes alone.

The look of a double chin can also be due to excess skin in the area that hangs loose on the neck. Skin laxity requires a different solution than Kybella®, which specifically targets fat.

How Does Kybella® Work?

Your body is already good at breaking down the fat you eat. A dietary chemical made in the intestines—known as deoxycholic acid—helps the body to absorb fats as they pass through the digestive system.

Kybella® uses a form of this deoxycholic acid to break down fat cells in other areas. When injected into a pocket of submental fat, the active ingredient damages the fat cell membranes. As a result, the cells are literally no longer able to “hold it together.” They break apart, and the circulatory system then clears away the free-floating debris. This results in a gradual reduction in volume.

What Does a Kybella® Injection Session Involve?

Patients who are unhappy with a double chin are invited to schedule a consultation at The Well Lounge, where they can share their aesthetic goals and get a recommendation for a customized treatment plan.

The Kybella® session itself involves multiple injections made directly into the submental area. We use sensation-reducing strategies to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. The injection process typically lasts around 20 minutes.

What Happens After a Kybella® Session?

Injections typically cause some common side effects, including swelling, bruising, and redness in the submental area, as well as possible pain, numbness, or hardness. These will go away in a short time, and The Well Lounge team will explain during your consultation about other side effects to know about and watch for.

Kybella® begins to prompt the breakdown of fat as soon as it is injected, but ideal results take time. A visible change typically develops after two to four treatments, while the ultimate desired result may require up to six treatment sessions, each spaced about a month apart.

What Other Neck-Focused Treatments Are Available at The Well Lounge?

Injectable Kybella® is ideal for reducing fat below the chin, but sagging skin is better addressed with MicroTyte, which combines microneedling with infrared light to tighten tissue and promote collagen production. Facial thread lifts and certain fillers, such as members of the Juvéderm® and Restylane® families, can also subtly lift jowls to create a better-defined jawline.
