We are excited to introduce you to Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC), a revolutionary treatment now available at our facility. WBC offers a multitude of benefits, from reducing inflammation and managing pain to enhancing athletic recovery and performance. Let’s explore how WBC can contribute to your overall well-being and why The Well Lounge is the best place to experience it.

What is Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC)?

Cryotherapy, in a more primitive sense, has been around for centuries. “The ancient Egyptians, and later Hippocrates, were always aware of the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of cold.”

‘Cryo-’ means ‘cold.’ Using a cold compress to treat injuries is still the go-to method for muscle tears, inflammation, surgical swelling, bumps, and bruises. In fact, one of the first things people run for after a fall is an ice pack. Now take that same concept, but envelop the entire body in sub-zero temperatures (usually below -200°F) with the help of liquid nitrogen, and you’ve got Whole Body Cryotherapy.

Whole Body Cryotherapy is usually performed in a special chamber – a cryogenic chamber. This ensures that appropriate treatment conditions such as temperature and humidity are maintained. The patient must always have regular contact with the therapist while in the chamber. For example, during treatments at The Well Lounge, your neck and head remain visible above the chamber, allowing continuous dialogue with the therapist. Some chambers maintain visibility using glass doors and a speaker system.

Despite the very low temperatures, the treatment is reported to be extremely safe. “The nitrogen being used to cool the single-person cryosauna is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (actually 78% of it).” To protect temperature-sensitive tissues such as hands and feet, patients wear dry socks, slippers, and gloves. During each session, the body releases endorphins, which are hormones that make a person feel good and energetic.

There is also no need to take a shower before or after treatment because the procedure is completely dry and does not make the skin wet.

The theory behind cryotherapy is that the freezing temperature experienced by your body sends signals to the brain, triggering an emergency or survival mode. This causes the body to constrict blood flow in the outer layers and send the blood supply to the innermost vital organs. While in this “emergency survival mode,” all the body’s resources are activated. The body’s ability to self-heal is enhanced because your blood is enriched with additional oxygen, hormones, enzymes, and nutrients – all of which are needed to survive under the extreme emergency created by the cryotherapy. Once you leave the cold environment, the newly enriched blood is flushed back into the rest of the body.

BENEFITS OF WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY

Pain Management and Inflammation Reduction
Cryotherapy helps reduce inflammation and pain, making it beneficial for conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain syndrome. Studies have shown that WBC can significantly improve the quality of life for patients with fibromyalgia by reducing systemic inflammation and enhancing the ability to perform daily activities.

Enhanced Athletic Recovery and Performance
Athletes use WBC to enhance muscle recovery, reduce soreness, and improve performance. By limiting blood flow and reducing inflammation, WBC helps athletes recover more quickly from physical exertion, allowing them to get back to their sport faster【18†source】. Additionally, undergoing cryotherapy before a workout can lead to improved athletic performance by increasing energy levels and preparing muscles for exertion.

Mood Enhancement and Quality of Life Improvement
The release of endorphins during the treatment can improve mood and overall quality of life. Cryotherapy has been associated with improved mental health outcomes, including the reduction of symptoms related to depression and mood disorders.

Oxidative Stress Reduction
Studies suggest that WBC may decrease oxidative stress, particularly in individuals with inflammatory conditions. This reduction in oxidative stress can lead to better overall health and reduced risk of chronic diseases.

Skin and Cellulite Improvement
The cold exposure can stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture and reducing cellulite. This makes WBC a popular choice for those looking to enhance their skin’s appearance and health.

Better Quality Sleep
WBC has been reported to improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing pain and inflammation, which can often disrupt sleep. Enhanced sleep quality contributes to better overall health and well-being.

Natural Energy Boost
Cryotherapy can provide a natural energy boost by stimulating the release of endorphins and increasing overall blood circulation. This surge in energy helps individuals feel more awake and alert throughout the day.

How Does Whole Body Cryotherapy Work?

Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) works by exposing the body to subzero temperatures, typically between -110°C and -160°C, for a short duration of 2-4 minutes. This extreme cold triggers a physiological response that includes vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) and subsequent vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) once the body returns to normal temperature.

Physiological Effects:

    • Vasoconstriction and Vasodilation: During cryotherapy, blood vessels constrict, reducing blood flow to inflamed areas and limiting swelling. After the session, the vessels dilate, increasing blood flow and delivering oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, which aids in recovery and reduces inflammation.
    • Endorphin Release: The cold exposure stimulates the release of endorphins, which are hormones that promote a sense of well-being and reduce pain perception. This contributes to improved mood and overall quality of life.
    • Anti-Inflammatory Response: WBC reduces the production of inflammatory cytokines and increases the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines, helping to manage and alleviate chronic pain and inflammation.

Mechanism of Action:

    • Temperature Reduction: The cold air in the cryotherapy chamber rapidly lowers the skin’s surface temperature. The body responds by constricting blood vessels to conserve heat and protect the core temperature.
    • Metabolic Boost: The exposure to extreme cold increases the metabolic rate, as the body works to reheat itself. This boost in metabolism can aid in weight management and overall energy levels.
